Glade Scent Design Studio

The Scentys4 dry scent diffuser looks similar to a video projector, but "projects" scents not video.

Each year, throughout the year, Glade introduces its new product lines, and they need unique, memorable ways to present their new scents to purchasing managers and buyers from big-box retailers. Enter, the Scentys4 dry scent diffuser.

Looking somewhat similar to a video projector, the Scentys diffuser — using a warming blower and dry fragrance capsules — "projects" scents rather than video. By interfacing with the Scentys diffuser, we created a variety of interactive applications that control the diffusers to "play" specific scents on cue. Hiding the diffusers in ceilings and counters throughout the Design Studio display environment — with the scents being piped into the various presentation areas — allows each application to manage its area by controlling its own dedicated diffuser, loaded with up to four unique scents.

Through the various applications, running on everything from touch-screen displays to laptops driving large-screen video monitors, the scents can be driven by user interaction, or played automatically via cue points embedded in videos. Additionally, the applications that use video can be updated via an XML file which allows an administrator to change the video files, each video's width and height, the scent slot number for each video, the scent volume (the amount of scent coming from the diffuser), and control whether or not a PowerPoint presentation launches after a video is done playing. Eliminating the need to recompile the application each time the presentation needs to change.
